Research Center for Hydrogen Industrial Use and Storage

Safty

The Department of Safety was newly established in 2013 when HYDROGENIUS entered its second phase. Research on hydrogen and materials had been promoted by the other four departments of HYDROGENIUS to that point. However, as hydrogen energy may be widely used in the future, and since increasing numbers of people or organizations are handling hydrogen, human errors are more likely to occur. We need to give this some consideration.
This department, therefore, conducts basic research on the safe use of hydrogen, promotes safety education, develops human resources, and promotes public awareness to establish the safe and economical use of a hydrogen infrastructure by collaborating with concerned businesses and organizations.

Outline of Activities

For a hydrogen energy society to become the norm, securing safety is vital, as hydrogen is highly flammable. Also, the necessary revisions of regulations should be done while maintaining safety. Risk assessment and risk management are regarded as effective tools to check and deepen the understanding of safety. Risk should be assessed from two sides: the likelihood of the occurrence of the risk, and how severely a materialized risk would affect society. The key to risk management is to see how far we can reduce the above-stated likelihood and affect. To study and analyze these subjects, basic research for a safety database is required, and education and training must be provided to those who implement the tasks. These subjects are important in enhancing public awareness and promoting public relations.
